Watched the whole thing up to and including Mission five. The humans are abandoning the planet Fairy, and Rei & Yukikaze are scrambled on a suicide mission to buy more time for the evacuation. The plan is for everyone to make it back through the gate to Earth before it closes, with Rei and Yukikaze being left behind on Fairy. Some time later, The female writer is speaking with Jack on his farm back on Earth. As she drives off and looks in the rearview mirror, Rei can be seen standing next to Jack, and the writer slams on the brakes. The end credits roll, then there is a small, minute long segment where Jack is briefing his pilots before the sortie... Rei is present at the briefing, and then is shown flying off in Yukikaze.
So what gives? Did Rei make it back to Earth and was pretending to be dead? Did no one make it back to Earth from Fairy before the gate closed, and they are all living in some JAM created fantasy? Or is it all a fantasy for Rei, who is still back on Fairy? The latter seems to be a bit off a rip-off of Stanislaw Lem's "Solaris"
