Critics Consensus

With plenty of pulpy action, a pleasantly retro vibe, and a handful of fine performances, Captain America is solidly old-fashioned blockbuster entertainment.

samuel k A good movie that is entertaining and fun to watch only complaint is that the love story with peggie seems useless after he gets transported 50-80 years into the future but besides that I love it! Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/22/24 Full Review Audience Member Wonderful movie! It gives a great backstory to how the avengers started. I loved the villains in this movie and the awesome performance of Hugo Weaving as Johann Schmidt. Overall this movie was cinematically stunning and I heavily recommend this movie! Rated 4.5/5 Stars • Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/13/24 Full Review Nick R 'Captain America: The First Avenger' is the very definition of a perfectly average movie that does nothing more than entertain, and nothing less than bore. It provides a straightforward origin for the Star Spangled Man with a plan, decent action and special effects, and character building. Ultimately it is just a setup for many future MCU projects and better Steve Rogers moments to come, but those future projects make it well worth it and makes this an enjoyable movie to come back to late on. It's not the best, but the MCU has helped it age rather well. Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/04/24 Full Review George B Going into this movie I was 100% ready for another nonstop action, CGI-type movie. However, Captain America: The First Avenger kind of caught me off guard. It's not just another effects-based movie; it's actually kind of deep, a story that really has a lot of heart and soul put into it. Yes, there are some moments when the CGI does not look amazing, but I think the story really makes up for that.Marvel really took the time to make sure that we care about Steve and that he is definitely a character worth rooting for. Even after he gets jacked, he still stays the same. Watching him go from a weak kid continuously getting rejected to Captain America is truly satisfying. The origin of Cap was great; it truly feels ripped from a comic book. This movie took some risks making it about WW2, but that's one of my favorite parts of the movie; it feels fresh and grounded. Red Skull as a villain was Jun; I really like Hugo Weaving in this role. He is kind of at the midrange when it comes to MCU villains for me.I do think the movie can feel a bit overwhelming at times, and the dialogue can be a bit sloppy, but those are the only problems I found with it.I am super excited to watch Avengers; we finally got introduced to Howard Stark, and I liked him at times; he was kind of just doing a Robert Downey Jr. Impression though. This movie sets up the big crossover event, with Nick Fury showing up in each movie.Overall, I liked the 1940s setting, the character development, and some of the action scenes were pretty cool, and Chris Evans was great as Cap.
